What Is A Basement?

Basements are usually one or more floors that are either partially or completely below ground level.

Typical uses for a basement include:

  • Utility space for washing and drying for example.
  • A home improvement DIY with a workbench and tools.
  • A personal gymnasium.
  • A full/part conversion for a complete self contained apartment conversion.

The word basement is usually used to describe a room or level of a building when the floor is 'habitable'. e.g. when it can be occupied or used for something such as a pool room or a private bar.

'Damp Proofing A Crawl Space.'

This type of basement is so called because, although there is still clearly another level below ground, there is insufficient space to stand up. This restricts the floor from being used for anything like utility space or accommodation.
So, crawl spaces are usually used as storage space or insulation, heating and cooling of the property. Either of these require the floor to be damp proofed or insulated.
Also, the structure will require the floor to be damp proofed and/or treated for waterproofing.

If the level is being converted or used for something else, such as simple storage and not adequate for domestic use. Then the floor is referred to as a cellar.

Cellars can be used for storage and are usually fairly basic. An example would be a wine cellar where the room temperature is fairly cool due to being situated underground.
